Clinical Services:
Kidney Transplant Program
The Kidney Transplant Program at Children's Hospital Boston evaluates children who are potential candidates for transplantation, and manages the care of children who have received transplanted kidneys.

The Kidney Transplant Program was established in 1971 to provide comprehensive care to children undergoing kidney transplantation. Our staff includes world-renowned experts who have extensive knowledge and experience in kidney transplantation of infants and children.

The multidisciplinary staff work as a team to provide individualized care to your child and include specialized transplant physicians, surgeons, nurses, nutritionists, social workers, psychologists, and child life therapists.

The Kidney Transplant Program is also a world leader in pediatric kidney transplant research and is committed to the development of new approaches to transplantation that will minimize unwanted side effects and improve the quality of children's lives.

The Kidney Transplant Program is closely integrated into the Children's Hospital Boston Nephrology Program which offers a continuum of services, including diagnosis and treatment of renal disorders, pediatric dialysis, and kidney transplant.

Children's Hospital Boston has the largest training program in the nation for physicians specializing in the care of children with renal disease. In addition, we have the largest number of NIH-sponsored pediatric kidney transplant research protocols in the world, and the only accredited pediatric kidney transplant fellowship program.

In the Spotlight
Living Donor Swap
Children's Hospital Boston, other New England area hospitals, and the New England Organ Bank have coordinated an innovative donor swap called the "Live Donor Paired Kidney Exchange."

The program allows a recipient who has a willing donor who is not an appropriate match to swap with another recipient-donor pair.

The program is the first-of-its-kind in Massachusetts and is one of only a handful to take place in the nation.
