Kidney Transplant Program

A comprehensive evaluation must be completed before your child can receive a kidney transplant.

Tests are done to gather information to assure that the transplant is done under the best possible conditions. Other tests determine the closeness of the match between the donor and child. Once the team and you decide that your child is ready, we will place your child on the transplant waiting list.

Because of the priority given to children under 18, the wait is usually only a few weeks or months. During this time, your child will receive close follow-up by the transplant team.

How are we notified when a kidney is available?

We maintain a list of telephone numbers of all candidates who are active on the deceased donor transplant list. It is important that you always leave a number where you can be reached twenty-four hours per day. When a donor has been identified for your child, we will contact you by telephone. You will be told to come to the hospital as soon as possible so your child can be prepared for the transplant. Most deceased donor transplants are performed within 12 hours of the phone call.
