Dr. Adeel-ur-Rehman, MSICU Observer for May 2009
Dr. Adeel-ur-Rehman is an international observer visiting the MSICU from Pakistan. Adeel attended medical school at Shifa College of Medicine in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Dr. Adeel-ur-Rehman is observing in the MSICU at Children's Hospital in Boston in order to further his academic training. Children's Hospital offers him the chance to observe rare cases such as patients on ECMO and patients with Moyamoya Disease which are not often seen in Pakistan. Additionally, he is able to improve his knowledge and skills through other observations which will also enhance his training experience such as mock codes.

Dr. Adeel-ur-Rehman says that his time observing in the MSICU has been amazing. What he has been most impressed by is the technology and equipment because his country does not have such developed technology. According to Adeel, "it is amazing that for each patient you can have ECMO at the bedside." Dr. Rehman's favorite part of his observation here has been participating in the case conference discussions due to the vast amount of knowledge the medical staff has to offer. Adeel has also enjoyed participating in the mock codes and learning about ECMO technology.

Dr. Rehman has spent his time meeting fellows, faculty, and residents in the MSICU, participating in daily rounds and conferences, and researching diseases that are rare in Pakistan. He is also taking time to learn from respiratory therapists and other staff, in order to make the most of his time here. According to Dr. Adeel-ur-Rehman, "Each patient is in the best hands he can hope for here at Children's."

Adeel plans to take the boards and return to Pakistan in the upcoming months. He will be applying to residency programs in the United States in the upcoming year with the ultimate dream of learning all that he can here in order to take the knowledge back to Pakistan where he can teach and apply the information.

While Dr. Rehman continues to observe new experiences and meet new people, the Division of Critical Care Medicine continues to foster international relations with physicians from all nations. The division regularly accepts new observers to the program for observation periods of one to three months.
