Flower Gluten-Free Eating in Italy
Image Planning ahead is always very important when it comes to traveling abroad with a Celiac child. There are always important questions to consider such as, "What restaurants will offer gluten-free foods on their menus for my child?" or "Where can I find gluten-free foods for my child"? It is due to these questions that cause parents to worry about traveling to places for a certain period of time. However, fear not! It's been discovered that Italy offers a variety of gluten-free meals and snacks throughout its markets and restaurants, making it a suitable vacation for any child with Celiac Disease.
Before you pack your bags, be sure to research the Celiac Society of Italy website for information on gluten-free foods in Italy. This website provides a list of restaurants in each province that will meet your criteria for gluten-free meals. There are gluten-free restaurants located throughout Rome, Florence and Sienna.

On top of that, certain airlines such as Swiss Air and American Airlines, provide gluten-free meals for their in-flight passengers with celiac disease to make their trip easier.

Many pharmacies (pronounced farma-cias) in Italy carry a variety of gluten-free products, which may include pastas, breads, crackers, croissants, cakes and cookies. They are very common in Italy and easy to find.

Gluten-free foods
Image Many restaurants offer special menus with a variety of foods including gluten-free pizzas, pastas, salads and desserts. Some examples of gluten-free meals include caprese salads (tomato, mozzarella, and basil), gluten-free pizzas (topped with mushrooms, olives, artichokes, ham, fresh tomatoes, or mozzarella cheese), and gluten-free pasta with seafood. Many restaurants offer gluten-free appetizers and snacks as well, including gluten-free breadsticks, crackers, and rolls.

Although there are no gluten-free restaurants listed for Venice, gluten-free pasta is available at the pharmacies, and most restaurants will prepare the gluten-free pasta you bring them, and for example, preparing it with olive oil and parmesan cheese.

Also, great snacks such as fresh fruits are offered at local fruit stands, along with cheeses from small supermarkets located throughout all of the Italian cities.

Dessert choices
Image Gluten-free desserts are hard to find throughout Italy, especially Italy's most popular dessert, gelato. However, soy frozen yogurts are offered at a few gelaterias. These gelaterias often provide outdoor signs labeled gluten-free, lactose free and cholesterol free. Several shops even offer gluten-free ice cream cones.

Lastly, the gluten-free Italian menus don't end in Italy when you leave. Maggiano's Little Italy in Boston now accommodates gluten-free meals and even serves gluten-free pasta.

So consider taking your family to Italy the next time you think it's time for a family vacation! Just remember to call the airline company and restaurants ahead of time to make your vacation hassle-free and gluten-free.
