waiter
> If your family is considering going to a restaurant, plan ahead. Check the restaurant website or call to see if they offer a gluten-free menu.
> When you have decided on a particular restaurant, call early between the lunch and dinner hour for example and speak with the chef. Discuss safe menu choices with him/her. If given enough advance notice the chef might be able to prepare special gluten-free items.
> If you have not had a chance to call ahead, speak with the manager upon arrival and explain your dietary concerns. Request to speak with the chef if possible. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
> Ask for foods to be prepared on clean cooking surfaces and request that clean utensils and pans be used in food preparation.
> Check to see if French fries are fried in the same oil as other fried foods, which may contain gluten, or if they have a dedicated fryer for fries.
> Ask for name brand beverages that you know are gluten-free.
> When ordering a salad, request that no croutons be added. Removing croutons from a previously prepared salad is not sufficient because crumbs may be left on the salad. Make sure the dressing is gluten-free.
> Remember to show your gratitude for special service.
