Doctors may be able to diagnose the problem on the basis of a non-invasive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the spine, which will show the cord tissue and any lipomas. A computed tomography (CT) scan may also be helpful to get more detail. The neurosurgeon may also want additional tests such as nerve conduction studies to understand the full extent of any nerve damage.
