Clinical Services (Moyamoya Disease Program):
Who gets Moyamoya?
In children, moyamoya can strike at any age, but the average age at diagnosis and treatment is around 7 years. It is more common among girls than boys and is also more prevalent in children of Asian descent.

About 7 percent of the time, the disease runs in families and those cases can be traced to a particular genetic defect. Other cases occur sporadically or in association with conditions such as sickle cell disease, Down syndrome and neurofibromatosis.
