Our innovative approach to treating moyamoya in kids

In Boston Children's Hospital's Moyamoya Disease Program and throughout our Department of Neurosurgery, our treatment is informed by our scientific research. In fact, Children’s is home to the world's most prolific Moyamoya disease research program at a pediatric hospital.

We have had a longstanding devotion to understanding Moyamoya disease, which leads to developing better treatments for children faced with this often devastating condition. Our neurosurgeons—who are also members of the Harvard Medical School faculty—conduct ongoing research into Moyamoya and often collaborate with visionary scientists at nearby universities and throughout the biomedical community around the world.

Current neurosurgery research projects underway at Children’s include:

  • determining the effectiveness of specific treatments for Moyamoya
  • examining molecules in the brain and spinal fluid that may impact new blood vessel growth
  • identifying particular proteins in urine and blood that may act as early warning signs of Moyamoya
  • developing new treatments for Moyamoya disease
