Auditory Processing
What is an Auditory Processing Evaluation?
Auditory Processing (AP) Evaluations help us better understand what we do with what we hear.

Parents whose children need AP testing share common concerns such as: their children often need words repeated, have difficulty following directions and are easily distracted, even when they hear normally.

This test determines how the child performs on various tasks designed to stress the auditory system, such as listening in background noise, listening to more complex information and temporal sequencing.

Results are compared to age level peers and recommendations are provided for parents, and teachers for classroom use.

How do I make an appointment?
When you call, you will be asked for some background information about your child. A parent questionnaire will be sent to you. Once it is returned, along with a copy of your child's educational evaluation and current IEP (if available), it will be reviewed by an audiologist and you will be contacted to schedule an appointment.

Please note that it could take up to 6 months to get an appointment for an Auditory Processing Evaluation.

You may request an appointment at our Boston, Waltham or Lexington locations by calling the Auditory Processing Intake Line: 617-355-6042.

What should I bring to the appointment?
Please bring:

  • Insurance cards
  • Referral number (if your insurance plan requires a referral for audiological evaluations)
How long does the evaluation take?
Please allow two hours for testing. This will include obtaining your child's medical history, a regular behavioral hearing test, an auditory processing evaluation and a time for the audiologist to verbally review any recommendations. A full written report will be mailed at a later date.
