We are again sponsoring a "Next Steps..." conference intended for parents of deaf and hard of hearing infants and toddlers and professionals who serve those families. Hundreds of participants from the six New England states and beyond have attended the "Next Steps..." conferences. Thursday, November 12 and Friday, November 13, 2009 are the dates for this 5th biennial "Next Steps..." conference. Mark your calendars now and save the dates.
Next Steps...2009 will feature a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars, and exhibits covering the full range of options and opportunities to assure timely initiation of effective, family-centered, early intervention with very young babies who are deaf or hard of hearing. The success of the first consortium held in 2001 has been repeated on a biennial basis in 2003, 2005, and 2007. Through a combination of large group presentations and smaller group workshops plus short courses and connections forged during shared meals, participants interact with one another and with national experts during the two-day consortium. Presentations cover a wide range of topics, including audiological, medical, psychological, cultural, methodological, and developmental considerations in providing support for families and effective intervention with deaf and hard of hearing infants and toddlers.
This year, two SPECIAL FEATURES are of note. The closing plenary session on Friday afternoon (11/13) will be presented by Arlene Stredler Brown, an engaging and knowledgeable, nationally recognized leader in the field of early identification of hearing loss and early intervention systems and services for children and their families. On Thursday morning (11/12), parents with their infants/toddlers are invited to explore the Children?s Discovery Museum in Acton, Massachusetts. Then, families will join all conference participants for a buffet lunch at the Boxborough/Holiday Inn Conference Center. Workshops for Thursday afternoon are designed to be practical and innovative. The array should appeal to parents participating with their young children during the afternoon. Pre-registration will be necessary.
