Jimmy Fund Neuro-Oncology Clinic
Children with brain tumors are treated through Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Care's Pediatric Brain Tumor Program. The program brings together specialists from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children's Hospital, including occupational therapists.
How can occupational therapy help?
Often, patients who are undergoing treatment for a brain tumor or who are recovering from brain tumor intervention, experience side effects related to the tumor as well as from various treatment interventions.
Different therapies, including surgery, radiation and chemotherapy can have specific effects on the body and can sometimes lead to:
- bone and soft tissue abnormalities
- muscle weakness
- limited range of motion and flexibility
- functional limitations
- decreased endurance
- delayed or missed developmental milestones
Occupational therapists can provide exercise programs, activity modification and developmental activities to improve daily living skills, school performance, and participation in age-appropriate activities.
Therapists perform thorough evaluations, assessing many different areas, before establishing treatment programs. Our therapy programs depend on each person's medical status and are always individualized to meet each person's individual needs.
What happens during a clinic visit?
Our occupational therapists are available on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2 pm to 5 pm at the pediatric neuro-oncology Brain Tumor and Outcomes clinics. Therapists in the clinics provide consultation as well as direct treatment when appropriate.
We may provide home hand or upper extremity strengthening, fine motor activities, and recommendations for activity modification. The need for more intense and frequent occupational therapy is also evaluated.
Patients may be followed periodically at the clinics for reevaluation as well as modification or progression of treatment programs. Patients can be referred to occupational therapy at Children's main campus, a Children's satellite location or a local facility if necessary.
