The Clinical Nutrition Service (CNS) at Children's Hospital Boston provides comprehensive nutrition consultation services for patients of all ages in both the inpatient and ambulatory (outpatient) settings. Using innovative diagnostic and evaluation techniques, our staff develops appropriate nutrition plans for infants, children and adolescents who suffer from a variety of disorders.

The CNS treats healthy, growing children as well as those being seen at Children's for acute or chronic illnesses or conditions. Our program is for anyone who has concerns and questions about their child's diet, feedings, foods, their child's growth, special diets and healthy eating.

Our program offers a multidisciplinary team approach, with staff experienced in a variety of highly specialized diagnostic and treatment areas:
Diagnostic Services

- Comprehensive nutrition screening and assessment of nutritional needs.
- Detailed anthropometric measurements (body fat measurements through skinfold measures, lean body mass through arm muscle area).
- Detailed diet record analysis (72 hour prospective diet record using a computer analysis program).
- State of the art body composition analysis through bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA).
- Measurement of resting energy expenditure (similar to basal metabolic rate) by indirect calorimetry.

Consultation/Treatment Services

- Planning, development and implementation of healthy eating guidelines and modified diet plans.
- Recommendations for infant formula or enteral feeding products.
- Recommendations pertaining to tube feedings.
- Management of patients receiving parenteral nutrition while hospitalized or as part of the Home Parenteral Nutrition Program.
- Nutrition education and diet instructions.
- Follow-up care for long-term nutritional needs.
- Consultation to patients, their care providers, and the health care team.
