Clinical Services (Division of Magnetic Resonance (MR or MRI) Imaging):
Our Specialty Areas
At Children's Hospital, MR is used in the diagnosis and follow-up of numerous conditions and permits the assessment of surgical resection, response to treatment, as well as the early detection of complications or disease recurrence. The MR Division incorporates the following subspecialties:
Neuroradiology is a medical specialty that involves diagnostic imaging of the central nervous system and head and neck region. At Children's, MR is one of the tools frequently used by specially trained neuroradiologists to diagnose and follow childhood diseases of the brain, spinal column, spinal cord, eye and orbit, ear and temporal bone; nose and paranasal sinuses; and face, facial bones, jaw, oral cavity, pharynx and neck. It is also frequently used to discern and follow conditions that affect a child's normal development.

MR is often an invaluable resource when it comes to evaluating the structure and function of the heart. In a number of congenital heart conditions evaluated here at Children's, MR can provide your child's cardiologist with information that cannot be obtained through other tests. In addition, our MR capabilities enable imagers to see blood moving through the heart.

MR is frequently used to diagnose various conditions that occur throughout the body. These include tumors, organ system diseases, and disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the organs of the chest, abdomen and pelvis. MR is an ideal imaging tool to evaluate sports-related injuries, especially injuries that occur in and around the knees, shoulders, hips, elbows or wrists. In these areas, MR provides clear images of soft tissue structures surrounding the bones and joints. It is also used to evaluate infections and inflammatory conditions and facilitate medical, surgical and interventional radiology procedures.

The MR Division serves Children's Advanced Fetal Care Center where early antenatal diagnosis, counseling, and treatment, if needed, is provided to unborn infants with complex health problems or birth defects. The results of the MR may assist decision making with regard to the timing and mode of delivery, as well as the need for timely treatment of surgery during the newborn period. MR provides detailed images of the fetal organs and tissues, which can lead to the diagnosis of congenital anomalies that in some cases can be helped or corrected immediately after birth, and even occasionally, before birth.
