Clinical Program

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR or MRI)

Technology

We have seven MR units in Boston, Peabody and Waltham for scanning babies, children, and teens, along with adults who have congenital conditions or sports injuries. An additional unit is located in the neurosurgical operating room for intraoperative imaging.

MR units at the hospital in Boston:

  • Siemens 3-Tesla TIM TRIO
  • Siemens 3-Tesla SKYRA
  • GE 1.5-Tesla TWIN
  • Ceiling mounted, retractable Siemens 1.5-Tesla Symphony (MR/OR) operating room unit for neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery

MR at the North (Peabody) satellite clinic:

  • Siemens 3-Tesla (3T) Verio

MRs at the Waltham satellite clinic:

  • 1.5-Tesla Siemens Avanto
  • Siemens 3-Tesla TIM TRIO
  • MR simulator that helps children participating in research studies adjust to the MR unit before undergoing a real scan; this unit is also used when possible to see if 4- to 6-year-old patients will be able to stay motionless for an exam without being sedated

Video goggles/music headphones

We provide special video goggles for patients who would like to watch a movie while undergoing their MR scan. Prefer to listen to music? Bring your own iPod.
