Division of Interventional Radiology
Image The Interventional Radiology Division at Children's Hospital Boston provides the full range of image guided therapeutic and diagnostic techniques. These procedures are performed by specially trained interventional radiologists who use a variety of imaging tools to see internal structures of the body as they intervene with appropriate treatment delivered through catheters or via other tiny instruments that are inserted through small incisions or natural pathways.

Interventional radiology has many uses and it has reduced the need for open surgery in many conditions. (See list of Diagnostic Tests and Procedures) It has, for example, provided a minimally invasive alternative in the treatment of:

  • vascular and lymphatic malformations,
  • pleural effusions (accumulation of fluid in the lungs or chest),
  • kidney or liver obstruction,
  • blood clots
  • and the placement of shunts, feeding tubes and peripherally inserted catheters.
These are just some ways these procedures are used at Children's.
