Lung Transplant Program
The Lung Transplant Program at Children's Hospital Boston evaluates children who are potential candidates for transplantation, and manages the care of children who have received transplanted lungs. A lung transplant is an operation performed to replace a diseased lung with a healthy one from another person.

In addition to lung transplants, selected patients with both heart disease and pulmonary disease are considered candidates for heart-lung transplantation.

Since the program's inception in 1990 through 2007, 58 bilateral, single, and heart-lung transplants have been performed.

Multidisciplinary Team
Pediatric lung transplantation at Children's is a multidisciplinary effort between the medical and surgical programs. The program is currently led by Gary Visner, D.O., who directs the medical team, and Craig Lillehei, M.D., who directs the surgical team. Dr. Lillehei has more than 15 years of experience in lung transplantation and has performed or participated in over 56 procedures.
