The Augmentative Communication Program is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am-5:00pm. To schedule an appointment call 781-216-2209.

When you call you will be asked for some background information which will help us determine if our center is best suited for your needs.

You will also be asked to fill out an intake questionnaire which asks for specific information regarding your medical, communication and education history. This intake questionnaire is provided below, or you can request that it be mailed to you.

How long will my appointment take?

You may meet with one or more specialists during your visit which may take one to three hours.

What should I bring to the appointment?

If possible please bring the following equipment:

• Communication books, displays and devices
• Manual wheelchair or stroller with laptray (Note: No stretchers, please.)
• Positioning supports (AFO's, trunk support, wrist supports, etc.)
• Current eyeglasses and hearing aids
• Preferred toys, foods, and/or other motivating materials
• Favorite computer software and videos
• Medical and educational reports from outside of Children's Hospital Boston
• Current Individualized Eduaction Plan (IEP) and progress notes

Augmentative Communication Program staff includes speech language pathologists, occupational therapists and computer specialists, all having expertise in the area of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).

Based upon intake information, you will meet with the appropriate specialists.

The following areas of functioning are typically considered within an evaluation:

Following an evaluation, clinicians recommend appropriate augmentative communication strategies and equipment consistent with each person's needs and abilities.

Recommendations typically include low-tech solutions, which may be combined with a speech output communication device, computer software, and/or alternative computer keyboard or mouse.

Augmentative Communication Program clinicians welcome input from and collaboration with care providers, Early Intervention and school personnel, local professionals, and private therapists.
