Research
Children's Habilitative Audiology Program participates in FDA pediatric investigational trials for new cochlear implants. Children's Hospital Boston participated in the FDA investigational trials for the Nucleus 24, Nucleus 24 Contour, and Clarion HiFocus cochlear implants.

After careful study, the Habilitative Audiology team has given numerous presentations on a wide range of cochlear implant topics, including:

  • Outcome of cochlear implant use in children with hearing loss caused by meningitis.

  • Incidence of complications following cochlear implantation.

  • Cultural influences on cochlear implant evaluations and expectations.

  • Effect of the cochlear implant on the function of the middle ear.

  • Prediction of outcomes in children implanted as adolescents.

  • Benefit provided by one versus tow cochlear implants.
  • Candidacy and outcomes of cochlear implantation for children with auditory dys-synchrony.
In conjunction with the Augmentative Communication Program at Children's, the Habilitative Audiology Program is developing educational software modifications to assist children with cochlear implants in using computer software to help them learn to listen and read.

The Habilitative Audiology team accumulates a wealth of data regarding the influence of children's age, language mode, language used in the home, prior hearing aid use, etiology and progression of hearing loss, therapeutic and educational services which will contribute to future studies.
