Center for Motility & Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
The Motility Center at Children's Hospital Boston is a subspecialty program within the Division of Gastroenterology. Our mission is to provide state of the art care and evaluation to children with motility and functional bowel disorders, and to their families. We evaluate and manage infants, children, adolescents and young adults with a wide variety of disorders resulting from abnormal motility or sensation of the gastrointestinal tract. Patients with motility disorders are referred to our center from New England, all of the United States and from around the world. The Center also has a large educational and research component.

Within the Motility Center we offer several clinical programs that specialize in treating complex issues through a multidisciplinary approach, including:

Our Specialities
The physicians and care team in the Center for Motility and Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders treat infants, children, adolescents and young adults with a wide variety of disorders resulting from abnormal motility of the gastrointestinal tract, including:
  • achalasia
  • constipation and encopresis
  • delayed gastric emptying
  • fecal incontinence
  • functional abdominal pain
  • gastroesophageal reflux
  • Hirschsprung's disease
  • intestinal pseudo-obstruction
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • fecal incontinence
  • functional abdominal pain
  • problems after fundoplication
  • dumping syndrome
  • postoperative problems after GI surgery
  • imperforate anus
  • myelomeningocele and other neurologic conditions that lead to fecal incontinence and constipation
  • atypical symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux
  • intractable nausea and vomiting
  • tracheo-esophageal fistula
Our Services
We provide consultative services for referring pediatricians and pediatric gastroenterologists. Services include:
  • Consultation, in-patient and out-patient

  • Diagnosis, using clinical, radiographic, nuclear medicine, and gastrointestinal motility studies. We routinely perform state of the art motility testing, which includes esophageal, antroduodenal, and anorectal manometry. We also perform esophageal impedance, esophageal function testing, intraesophageal pH monitoring, electrogastrography, and barostat studies. The center collaborates closely with all the other services of the hospital to provide the best diagnostic tools. These include radiology, nuclear medicine and pathology.

  • Comprehensive therapeutic plans, which may include medications, nutrition, behavior modification, surgery, endoscopic or experimental therapy

  • Access to investigational drug therapy in clinical trials

  • Coordination of care plans with primary care and other specialty physicians

  • Long-term follow-up care

  • Access to hospital and community resources

  • Assistance with insurance coverage and other matters relating to receiving care
