Center for General Pediatric Urology

Who we are

The Center for General Pediatric Urology at Children's Hospital Boston cares for children who have disorders of the urological system. The Center offers state-of-the-art treatments for many urologic conditions. We even use robotic surgery for many procedures, which means less pain, a faster recovery period, a shorter hospital stay, smaller scars and a happier patient - your child.

To make visiting us convenient for you, we schedule appointments at office locations throughout the greater Boston area as well as at Children's main Boston campus.

To make your visit as easy as possible, we try to schedule radiologic testing on the same day of your child's office visit.

Our expertise

Our internationally recognized Urology program has deep experience caring for children with a wide range of urologic conditions and developing innovative treatments -- from one of the first laparoscopic removals of a kidney to the first minimally invasive procedure correcting pediatric ureteral reflux to the development tissue-engineered bladders.

  • Children's has one of the few pediatric urology centers with an active research and training program in robotic surgery.
  • We also conduct extensive laboratory research to better understand the tissues of the  genitourinary tract, which have been poorly studied in comparison to those of other organ systems, like the brain and heart. Building this fundamental knowledge should pave the way to developing new and innovative therapies for a variety of common illnesses such as incontinence, chronic pelvic pain, prostate and bladder cancer and congenital defects.
  • Through clinical outcomes research, we constantly evaluate the results of different treatment options, establishing "best practice" techniques and guidelines for a variety of urologic diseases like prenatal hydronephrosis, vesicoureteral reflux, adolescent varicocele, hypospadias, undescended testicles and bladder exstrophy.

Bacteria and urinary tract infections

A urinary tract infection occurs when microorganisms - usually bacteria from the digestive tract - get into the urethra (the hollow tube that carries urine out of the body) and travel up into the bladder where they begin to multiply. Most infections arise from Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria, which normally are found in the colon. Left untreated, urinary tract infections can worsen and spread, leading to kidney infection and serious medical complications.

In utero diagnosis and intervention

Our Center for Perinatal Urology can evaluate and sometimes treat urinary problems diagnosed before a baby is even born.
