Over the last 25 years, the Urology Department at Children's Hospital Boston has maintained a Neurourology Unit that comprehensively evaluates the lower urinary tract in children.

Bladder dysfunction and urinary incontinence and infection are common problems in pediatric urology. Twenty-five percent of bladder dysfunction issues that occur in children are related to neuromuscular conditions. These issues can arise from developmental abnormalities in the fetus, problems that occur around the time of birth, or from traumatic injuries.

Who we treat
Most of the children we treat come from the greater Boston metropolitan area and around New England. However, we have also received referrals from other states, as well as Mexico, South America and the Middle East.

The Neurourology Unit, within the Urology Department, has made major advances in treating children with myelodysplasia and other neurologic conditions that have revolutionized care for these children both nationally and internationally.

What we treat
  • Myelomeningocele
  • Tethered spinal cord
  • Sacral agenesis
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Attention deficit/hyperactivity or developmental disorders that are associated with urinary incontinence and/or urinary infection
  • Imperforate anus
  • Injuries to the spinal cord and/or head
  • Infections of the nervous system that lead to urinary incontinence
  • Congenital anomalies of the lower urinary tract that produce incontinence and functional disorders that lead to bothersome symptoms of the bladder.
