CAIR is one of the largest centers of its kind in the United States. Each year, our program cares for approximately 200 children from the US and abroad.

How long will my appointment take?
One of our strengths of CAIR is the multidisciplinary nature of our team. This can make for a long clinic experience, however, as specialists in gastroenterology, surgery, nutrition, nursing and pharmacy meet with the patient and family in sequence and then often together.
Physician and nurse practitioners of the CAIR team will perform a thorough physical examination, and all members of the team take a detailed history. Sometimes visits include blood drawing and/or x-ray studies. Depending on the length of these procedures, the clinic visit may take 1-3 hours.
What tests or procedures should we be prepared for?
To determine whether your child has short bowel syndrome, your child's doctor will perform a physical exam.
Diagnostic tests may include a combination of the following:
- Blood tests
- Abdominal x-ray
- Abdominal ultrasound
- Stool sample
- Endoscopy
- Colonoscopy
- Indirect calorimetry
- Breath hydrogen analysis
These tests are not typically performed on the same day as the clinic visit.
