Clinical Services:
Training Record
The "graduates" of the fellowship program during the past 40 years best illustrate the success of our approach to training: 94 percent are in academic medicine and 61 percent are doing primarily laboratory or clinical research (or are administering research). Another way to look at the program is to analyze our success at achieving our major objective, which is to train leaders of American hematology and oncology. To evaluate our success in preparing fellows for leadership positions, one must consider the cohort who began training between 1966 and 1992. More recent fellows are still completing their training or are early in their academic careers.
Leadership Positions
The 1966-1992 cohort contains 108 individuals of whom 96 (90 percent) are currently in academic medicine or are recently retired from academic positions. Of these, 21 percent are or were Hospital Directors or Department Chairs, 39 percent are or were Chiefs of Divisions of Hematology/Oncology or Bone Marrow Transplantation, three percent are Heads of Other Divisions, 11 percent are Research Professor or Directors of Research, and eight percent are or were Heads of Major Clinical Programs. Thus, 82 percent of the group in academic medicine have reached positions of prominence. An additional two percent are Leaders in the Biotechnology/Biopharmaceutical Industry. Twenty percent of the group who began between 1992 and 1997 are also already in leadership positions, but most are early in their careers and have not reached their full potential.
Select Societies
A remarkable number of the graduates of our fellowship program or our other trainees are members of the institutions that guide American medicine and pediatrics and that select their members based on scientific accomplishment. No other pediatric program, in any specialty, has such a record of accomplishment by its alumni.

National Academy of Sciences and/or the Academy's Institute of Medicine - 10 members
Howard Hughes Medical Institute - 9 members
Association of American Physicians - 30 members
American Pediatric Society - 36 members
American Society of Clinical Investigation - 51 members
Society for Pediatric Research - 61 members

Five alumni have served as President of the American Society of Clinical Investigation and one as Vice-President. Five have served as President of the American Society of Hematology. Five were awarded the prestigious Dameshek Prize for Research in Hematology, four received the equally prestigious E. Donnall Thomas Prize in Hematology, and eight received the E. Mead-Johnson Award for Research in Pediatrics. These are the highest research awards in each specialty. Four received the Henry M. Stratton Medal in recognition of a distinguished career in American hematology. Finally, David Nathan, has receive both the Howland Award, the highest honor in pediatrics and the Kober Medal, the highest honor in internal medicine.
