Throughout research training each clinical and laboratory fellow is aided by an independent research advisory committee that resembles a graduate school thesis committee. The laboratory research mentoring program is supervised by Dr. David Pellman and the clinical research mentoring by Stephen Sallan. Each committee is chaired by a faculty member and has one or two other members, who are chosen by the fellow and Drs. Pellman or Sallan for their expertise in the area of the fellow's research. One or both of these members may be from outside the division of hematology/oncology.
The committee is formed early in the first research year, after the fellow and his/her preceptor have decided on a specific project. Fellows meet with their committee's once or twice per year and present their research and future plans. Preceptors are invited to attend. The committee offers advice on problems the fellow has encountered, suggestions for new research directions, opinions about the most promising leads to pursue, and the like; advises the fellow about funding opportunities and grant writing; and otherwise assists the fellow in any way possible. The committee remains with the fellow until the fellow achieves independence.
