Louis K. Diamond
The Hematology/Oncology program at Children's Hospital Boston is 65 years old and among the oldest in the country. It was founded by Dr. Louis K. Diamond, who is often said to have been the father of Pediatric Hematology, and by Dr. Sidney Farber, who originated cancer chemotherapy. The modern program dates from 1967 when Dr. David G. Nathan replaced Dr. Diamond as Division Chief.

Under Dr. Nathan's direction, the program expanded from a faculty of three and 1,200 net square feet (nsf) of research space to a faculty of 21 and 12,000 nsf. During that time, the Division also greatly expanded its clinical activities. Following the death of Dr. Farber in 1974, Dr. Nathan assumed responsibility for all Pediatric Oncology at Children's and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Soon thereafter, a bone marrow transplant program was begun. In 1985, Dr. Nathan became Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics and Drs. Samuel E. Lux and Steven J. Burakoff were appointed to direct the combined program. Dr. Burakoff moved to New York University in 2000 and was replaced by Dr. Stuart H. Orkin.
The program continued to grow under Drs. Lux, Burakoff and Orkin's tutelage. In particular laboratory research space expanded to 42,000 nsf following the addition of a new wing of the Enders research building (July 1990) at Children's, the move to new space at Dana-Farber (1993 and 1998), and the opening of the new Karp Family Research Laboratories at Children's (Nov 2003). Clinical research space also expanded, with the addition of new office space on Shields-Warren 3 at Dana-Farber and on Farley 7 at Children's. In addition the inpatient stem cell transplantation unit, the inpatient oncology unit, the oncology (Jimmy Fund) clinic and portions of the hematology clinic have all been renovated in the past few years. During this time, the faculty has grown to 90 individuals.

The program entered a new era in recent years, as Dr. David A. Williams replaces Dr. Lux as Chief of Hematology/Onclogy at Children's.
