The book's foundation is the understanding that, while personal stories may vary, the emotional jolt patients and families endure when being thrust into an unfamiliar and uncertain world is universal. To support those just beginning their cancer journey, we asked families to share thoughts they wanted to tell new families and words they wished others had spoken to them as they navigated their child's cancer diagnosis. We also asked patients to address those who will follow in their footsteps, to offer encouragement and advice for other children, adolescents and young adults facing cancer treatment. Together, the images and words in "Faces of Hope" provide wisdom, give valuable insight, inspire courage and evoke hope for those beginning the journey that is childhood cancer.
A true community effort, the creation of "Faces of Hope" was led by Denise Ethier, Rebekah Butcher-Ciano, Carey Sullivan and Alicia Pensarosa, photography and graphic design students at the Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University. They worked closely with our patients and families to capture the emotion, strength and knowledge presented through "Faces of Hope."
