Clinical Services (Cancer):
Our Expert Care Team
For cancer in particular, it is very important that your child be treated by a team of pediatric specialists. Pediatric pathologists, radiologists and surgeons are specially trained to diagnose and treat rare cancers, such as medulloblastoma and optic glioma, which are rarely seen by adult medicine colleagues.
Global childhood cancer experts
The childhood cancer specialists at Children's Hospital Boston and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute are internationally recognized as one of the world's most knowledgeable and experienced teams for evaluating, diagnosing and treating childhood cancer. They oversee one of the oldest and most active pediatric stem cell transplantation units in the country and run two separate brain tumor clinics each week, one for children requiring quarterly visits and one for childhood brain tumor survivors.

Through involvement with collaborative research organizations like the Children's Oncology Group, our specialists oversee more pediatric cancer Phase I clinical trials than any other program in New England. Because of these therapies, as well as the advanced technology available through Dana-Farber and Children's, our program reports some of the best outcomes for the most complex and rare childhood cancer diagnoses.

Extensive subspeciality support
Cancer and the treatment it requires often cause many complications, some of which require care from other focused specialists. The partnership between Dana-Farber and Children's means a pediatric expert in every aspect of your child's health is always available for consultation, and childhood specialists from more than 30 subspecialties at Children's, including endocrinology, cardiology and neurology, among many others, will work with your child's cancer specialist to provide supplemental care when needed. Psychologists, social workers, interpreters and chaplains are also available to help your family at any time.
Expert nursing staff
Image On average, the specially trained pediatric oncology nurses at Children's and Dana-Farber each have 10 years of experience caring for young children with cancer. Many hold advanced nursing degrees, professional certification and participate in educational conferences to maintain familiarity with the latest therapies. One-on-one nursing care is also available and provided as needed.

In addition to being expert clinicians, our nurses are committed to delivering compassionate care and maintaining an optimistic, friendly atmosphere.

Beyond treatment
Today, 80 percent of all children diagnosed with cancer will survive into adulthood. Childhood cancer survivors of all ages are invited to visit the David B. Perini, Jr. Quality of Life Clinic, a sophisticated childhood cancer survivorship program that serves this growing population. At the Clinic, survivors meet with medical professionals about any long-term effects related to their diagnosis and treatment. In addition, Dana-Farber's program includes a special focus on helping patients and families adjust to life as a childhood cancer survivor.
