Clinical Services (Blood Disorders):
Hematology Care Team
You and your child will receive care from many specialists at Children's Hospital Boston. Our Hematology Program team involves medical experts and other professionals to help with your family's well-being and peace of mind.

Hematologists
Pediatric hematologists diagnose and treat diseases that affect the blood and blood-forming tissues in newborns, infants, children and adolescents. Many hematologists specialize in one aspect of the blood, such as white blood cells, red blood cells or platelets. Six pediatric hematologists, each overseeing a different specialty area, work together to manage the programs and services offered through the Hematology Program at Children's. Each patient has a primary hematologist, but other hematologists and nurse practitioners may be involved in a patient's care as well.

Immunologists
Pediatric immunologists specialize in treating all aspects of the immune system. They will work closely with your child's primary hematologist.

Nurses
An outpatient hematology nurse is available to answer general questions about your child's care, as well as educational information about their conditions.

Nurse practitioners
Nurse practitioners are nurses who have advanced education and specialized skills in treating children with blood disorders. They participate in the diagnosis, management and coordination of care for patients of all ages.

Licensed clinical social workers
A licensed clinical social worker is available to meet with you and your family. Social workers provide expert support and counseling servies to help parents and families adjust to the emotional impact of a child's illness and hospitalization. Because every family and every situation is different, social workers are available to help you determine and assist you with your specific needs.

Social workers are also available to provide information about specialized services and resources that parents often find useful in adjusting to the hospital, and adjusting to home life after hospitalization. For more information, or to request a visit from a social worker call us at 617-355-8246.

Child psychiatric consultants
A child psychiatric consultant and the hospital's Medical Coping Clinic are available to provide emotional and supportive care for you and your child. If you would like to talk to a counselor, we encourage you to contact your primary physician or nurse to arrange an appointment.

Hospital volunteers
Hospital volunteers visit patient care units daily to provide companionship and amusement to patients.

Interpreters
Interpreters for more than 35 languages, including sign language, are available to assist patients and families. Spanish speaking interpreters and social workers are available 24 hours a day for families who speak Spanish. If you will require an interpreter, please notify Interpreter Services, prior to admitting your child to the hospital, so we can be prepared upon your arrival. 617-355-7198.
