Clinical Services (Blood Disorders):
Hematology Referral Guidelines
The following referral guidelines apply to Children's Hospital Boston's Hematology Program at Longwood, Waltham and Lexington.
To schedule a consult call
First, fax your patient's clinical information, reason for referral and insurance information to us at 617-730-0641. After sending this information, call the New Patient Coordinator at 617-355-8246. You will be called back by an appropriate clinical staff member.

For emergencies or off-hours questions, call the hospital page operator at 617-355-6363, and ask for the on-call hematology attending.

When you call
The New Patient Coordinator will:

  • Identify which clinical materials you should send to us for review, such as blood test results, newborn screening reports, family studies, growth charts or blood smears. These reports must be faxed prior to the visit. We cannot make an appointment without this information.
  • Call the family to schedule the visit, after your patient's clinical information has been reviewed.
After your patient's visit
You will receive an update about your patient's diagnosis and treatment plan as quickly as possible. A written report will be sent to the referring provider for each ambulatory visit.
