Referral Process |
|
|
- If the diagnosis of leukemia is suspected or confirmed, you or your physician should call attending physician on the oncology consult service, who can be reached at (617) 632-3352.
- On nights and weekends, an attending pediatric oncologist can always be reached via the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute page operator at (617) 632-3352.
- Patients will be referred to either the Jimmy Fund Clinic or the Emergency Room at Children's Hospital Boston where they will be evaluated by an oncology fellow and an attending physician. Other physicians may also be involved.
- Most new patients are admitted to the hospital the day of their initial evaluation.
- After initial evaluation, we will meet with you to have a thorough discussion of the diagnosis, any further testing and recommended treatment.
|
|
- Patients with previously diagnosed leukemia seeking a second opinion should contact our program at 1-888-PEDI-ONC (1-888-733-4662) or (617) 632-5508.
- A patient coordinator will obtain a brief clinical history and will then review the information with the appropriate pediatric oncologist. Arrangements for the necessary medical information to be sent here, including a summary letter, any pathology specimens, and any radiologic studies done will be made.
- On the day of your consultation, you should expect to spend most of the day here. All patients coming for second opinion will be seen by the appropriate oncology staff physician. As needed, you may also see an oncology fellow, the radiation oncologist, and/or the surgeon.
- After initial evaluation, we will meet with you to have a thorough discussion of the diagnosis, any further testing and recommended treatment. We will also discuss our recommendations with your referring physician.
