The factors for determining the prognosis and long-term survival of children with kidney tumors include the type and extent of the tumor. Your child's age and overall health, response to therapy and tolerance of specific medications and procedures also affect the outcome.
Early detection and new therapies mean more children are surviving into adulthood. However, many of these children may develop problems or side effects from their treatment later in life. For kidney tumor patients in particular, it's important to continually evaluate function of the remaining kidney.
To help patients monitor their overall health after treatment is completed, we encourage children and adolescents to continue long-term care through Dana-Farber's David B. Perini Jr. Quality of Life Clinic. The Clinic offers access to experts who can address a wide range of areas including intellectual function, hormonal evaluation and treatment, neurological assessment, and dental evaluation and treatment, among others.
The Clinic is open to childhood cancer survivors of all ages. To schedule an appointment, please call 617- 632-5124.
