White Blood Cell (WBC) Disorders Program

White blood cells are the components of blood that help the body fight infection. The White Blood Cell Disorders Program at Children's Hospital Boston provides comprehensive treatment for people with non-malignant white blood cell disorders. Conditions treated in the program include:

- Low white blood cell count and neutropenia
Examples include "benign neutropenia of childhood," familial neutropenia, autoimmune neutropenia, Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome, Kostmann syndrome (severe congenital neutropenia), and toxic effects of some prescription medications. Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome and Kostmann syndrome are also treated by our Bone Marrow Failure Program.
- High white blood cell count
- White blood cells that do not function properly
Examples include chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), leukocyte adhesion deficiency, myeloperoxidasae deficiency, and Chediak Higashi syndrome.
