Treatments
Patients who develop clots usually receive anticoagulation therapy. Anticoagulation makes blood clots less likely to develop. If a clot does develop, the anticoagulation medication also assists in preventing it from extending and helps heal the blood vessel. The most appropriate form of anticoagulation may be different for each patient.

Examples of anticoagulation medication are:

  • Oral agent such as Coumadin/Warfarin
  • Intravenous or subcutaneous heparin
  • Subcutaneous injections of a low molecular weight heparin such as enoxaparin (Lovenox), fragmin (Daltaparin)
