The Thalassemia Program at Children's Hospital Boston provides comprehensive care for children and adults with all forms of thalassemia. The program is one of only five centers in the country designated for clinical excellence in thalassemia by the National Cooley's Anemia Foundation. It is also part of a five-center thalassemia network chosen by the National Institutes of Health to foster clinical research into the disease.
Directed by physicians who are experts in hematology, transfusion medicine, and genetics, the Thalassemia Program offers unrivaled expertise in thalassemia treatment as well as access to the latest research protocols available in the world.
Thalassemia is a complex disease that can create a wide range of medical complications. The Thalassemia Program offers a team of multidisciplinary medical specialists who understand the unique problems caused by thalassemia and related disorders. These include: cardiologists, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, audiologists, ophthalmologists, infectious disease specialists, and genetic counselors. Our program also offers a full-time thalassemia nurse practitioner, who works to identify patient needs and coordinate care.
