Long-Term Outlook |

Better understanding and careful medical management have minimized many of the life-threatening complications associated with thalassemia. Experimental new therapies promise to enhance compliance with some of the more demanding aspects of treatment, such as following the body's iron load and chelation. Other research on the horizon, including the prospect of gene therapy to cure the disease, holds great promise. Today, thalassemia major, once considered usually fatal, is a chronic condition that can be managed to allow a relatively normal life. The outlook for most with thalassemia is quite good, and improving all the time.
