Innovations & Research
The Boston Hemophilia Center at Children's Hospital Boston is dedicated to advancing understanding and treatment of hemophilia. Investigators at Children's participate in large, multi-center research studies, as well as lead smaller independent initiatives to help improve treatment.

Studies that are currently open for both children and adults include:

  • Universal Data Collection (UDC). The Centers for Disease Control has established the UDC project to monitor the safety of the nation's blood supply for persons being treated with blood products, as well as to track the occurrence of joint complications experienced by persons with hemophilia. Close monitoring of the blood supply has virtually eliminated the spread of viral diseases from blood products in the United States. Resulting safety and prevention measures include more sensitive donor screening methods, new processes for viral inactivation and the development of genetically engineered (recombinant) factor.
  • A randomized clinical trial comparing different doses of NovoSeven infusions to a standard dose of FEIBA, for joint bleeds in hemophilia patients with inhibitors.
  • A data collection study to assess response to NovoSeven in hemophilia patients with inhibitors.
Research studies available for patients at Children's only include:
  • A randomized clinical trial comparing high dose and low dose preventive (prophylactic) NovoSeven infusions in hemophilia patients with inhibitors.
  • A randomized clinical trial comparing low dose and high dose factor VIII infusions for immune tolerance in patients with severe factor VIII deficiency with inhibitors.
