Research from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has demonstrated that regular medical care in a designated hemophilia treatment center (HTC) significantly reduces complications and improves the health and well-being of people with this disorder. As a federally-designated HTC, the Boston Hemophilia Center at Children's Hospital provides comprehensive medical evaluation and treatment and special expertise in treating infants, children and adolescents. The program offers a comprehensive annual evaluation conducted by all medical specialists involved in treating hemophilia. This includes hematologists, orthopedists, geneticists, nurses, social workers, physical therapists, and others. All appointments take place on the same day in one clinic to minimize time away from school, work and other activities.

The Hemophilia Center at Children's offers a home infusion program that has many benefits. People with hemophilia can lead more normal lives if they have the ability to manage their illness as independently as possible. Administering clotting-factor at home allows faster treatment of bleeding episodes, which significantly reduces complications and long-term damage. Early intervention can also reduce the amount of costly factor replacement that is required. In addition to enhancing a sense of personal control over their lives, home infusion also allows those with severe hemophilia to benefit from preventive infusion of factor replacement without frequent trips to the hospital. Staff members evaluate each situation to determine the best approach for each patient.

Clotting-factor replacement and the supplies necessary to administer it are very costly. As a federally-designated HTC, Children's can provide these products to patients at a significant discount. Proceeds from the sale of these items help fund the education and training services offered by the center.

The Hemophilia Center at Children's offers the services of physician who is both a hematologist and a geneticist to advise families on the genetic implications of the illness. This can be especially important for families who are carriers of the illness when making the decision to have additional children, or as people with hemophilia or carriers reach child-bearing age. Sophisticated genetic testing is also available to help identify the particular genetic abnormality that causes the illness.
