Anemia and RBC Disorders

About us
At the Anemia and Red Blood Cell Disorders Program at Dana-Farber/Children's Hospital Cancer Center, we care for children with a number of conditions that affect the red blood cells. Children we treat have conditions that include:
- autoimmune hemolytic anemia and Evan's syndrome
- iron deficiency anemia
- hemoglobinopathies
- red cell enzyme deficiencies
- red cell membrane disorders, such as hereditary spherocytosis
- polycythemia
Our Anemia and Red Blood Cell Disorders Program is led by Matthew Heeney, MD, an expert in pediatric hematology, who specializes in sickle cell disease and inherited disorders of iron deficiency, sideroblastic anemia and iron overload.
Our program brings together experienced pediatric subspecialists and support staff, including:
- pediatric hematologist/oncologists
- pediatric hematopathologists
- a pediatric hematology nurse practitioner
- social workers
- designated hematology patient coordinators
Children with other types of blood disorders, including bleeding disorders and bone marrow failure syndromes, are also treated through our Division of Hematology. Please select a program from the list below for additional information:
