Flower Patient Stories

Ryan Haigh, from Atlanta, GA

Image While in utero, Ryan was diagnosed with severe right-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH).

After extensive evaluation and family discussion with Jay Wilson, MD, and AFCC program director Russell Jennings, MD, Ryan underwent an EXIT procedure with trial of ventilation and placement on ECMO. He then underwent subsequent repair of his diaphragm and spent two months at Children's Hospital Boston recovering from his surgery. Ryan is now an active and healthy toddler.

Anna Langan, from Lowell, MA
A high-risk obstetrician at Brigham and Women's hospital gave Jaime and Tom Langan's unborn child about a 20 percent chance of survival. The fetus had a hole in her diaphragm, allowing her stomach, bowel and part of her liver to migrate into the left side of her chest cavity and leaving her left lung no room to grow.
