Clinical Research
Current clinical projects include:
  • Novel immunoregulatory treatments for children with severe arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus who are unresponsive to routine therapies.

  • The study of alternative medications and remedies for the treatment of children with rheumatologic diseases.

  • Laboratory studies of the role of the immune system in mediating inflammation in skin and joints, designed to lead to novel approaches for preventing disease.

  • Research into the etiology of Kawasaki disease.

  • The role of antiphospholipid antibodies in post-operative cerbrovascular accidents.

  • Studies of new pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic approaches to pain control in children.

  • New methods of teaching musculoskeletal diagnostic skills to pediatric interns.
In addition, Children's Hospital Boston is an active participant in the Pediatric Rheumatology Collaborative Study Group, affording opportunities to participate in national multi-center therapeutic trials; anticipated in the near future are the trials of the newest genetically engineered biologics in children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
Basic Science Research
Current laboratory-based projects include:
  • Studies of adhesion molecules and mechanisms regulating leukocyte homing to inflammatory sites.

  • Research into the immune recognition of non-protein antigens.
