Children's plastic surgeon-in-chief, Dr. John Meara, is also director of Harvard Medical School’s Program in Global Surgery and Social Change. He recently led a study that revealed Caesarean sections in cases of obstructed labor not only save costs—they also save lives.

“This research shows that surgical interventions are within the same realm of cost effectiveness as very common interventions, like measles vaccination or antiretrovirals for HIV, and should be considered as part of the basic tool kit for global health delivery,” Dr. Meara said.
