Program Details

Regardless of the track chosen, the main focus of the Paul Farmer Global Surgery Fellowship curriculum revolves around education, research, and the provision of surgical care in low resource settings. Both Clinical and Research Fellows are expected to work collaboratively and participate in the education and training of other residents and medical students that may be working as part of the Global Surgery Team.

_{Training Sites}

Serving in resource-poor settings is an integral part of the Fellowship experience. Both Clinical and Research Fellows in the Paul Farmer Global Surgery Program will have the opportunity to partner with underserved populations in at least one of the following communities:

Haiti – Zanmi Lasante (“Partners In Health” in Haitian Creole) is PIH’s flagship project – the oldest, largest, most ambitious and most replicated. Currently PIH/ZL operates over a dozen sites in the Central Plateau and Artibonite regions of Haiti serving a catchment area of 1.2 million people. In the spring of 2013 PIH/ZL and the Haitian Ministry of Health will open the Hospital Universitaire Mirebalais in Mirebalais, Haiti, which will house 320 patient beds, 6 operating theatres and a surgical residency training program. Fellows will be able to work alongside the clinicians at these sites to support training, education, research, and clinical service delivery according to their specific track.

Rwanda – Since being invited in 2005 by the Rwandan government to work in underserved areas of the country, Partners In Health has brought quality health care to 800,000 people in three rural and impoverished districts. Together with its Rwandan sister organization, Inshuti Mu Buzima (Kinyarwanda for Partners In Health), PIH now works at three district hospitals and 37 health centers. Fellows will be able to work alongside PIH/IMB clinicians in surgical care delivery, education, research, and training at the affiliated sites.

Liberia – Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in surgical care delivery, education, and research activities with our partners at JFK Medical Center in Liberia. Program activities represent a growing multi-institutional collaborative effort to improve clinical care and post-graduate education in surgery in and around the capital of Monrovia. Logistical support is provided by the non-profit HEARTT.

Additional Sites – While the above sites represent the core sites for Fellows in the Paul Farmer Global Surgery Fellowship, additional sites for clinical activity may become available as opportunities develop.
