Visiting Clinicians' Observational Program

The Visiting Clinicians' Program has been established for active clinicians to observe administrative, academic, clinical and outpatient services and surgery within our very active clinical pediatric and adolescent gynecology service.

About the Division

The Division of Gynecology at Children's Hospital Boston was established more than 25 years ago and currently has the busiest clinical program in pediatric and adolescent gynecology in the United States. The Division has surgical and medical attending gynecologic physicians and a surgical consultation service performing numerous inpatient and outpatient procedures relating to pediatric and adolescent gynecology.

We provide specialty services for individuals from birth through age 22 relating to:

  • vulvovaginitis
  • vulvar dermatologic abnormalities
  • urethral prolapse
  • labial hypertrophy
  • vulvar lesions and masses
  • congenital abnormalities of the hymen (imperforate hymen, microperforate hymen, septate hymen, hymenal skin tags)
  • vaginal abnormalities (agenesis of the lower vagina, transverse vaginal septum, longitudinal vaginal septum, agenesis of the vagina)
  • cervix abnormalities, including cervical agenesis
  • uterus abnormalities (uterine agenesis, obstructed uterine horns)

  • congenital anomalies of the Fallopian tube and broad ligament
  • pelvic pain, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis
  • sexually transmitted diseases, management of abnormal pap smears and colposcopy
  • breast disease including masses
  • surgical repair of traumatic and gynecologic injuries (including straddle injuries, rape and puncture injuries)
  • gynecologic issues relating to treatment of cancer patients/survivors
  • ovarian masses; ovarian cysts and masses
  • revision of female circumcision/mutilation procedures
    • The Gynecology Program functions as a Division of the Department of Surgery at Children's and has numerous collaborative efforts with the General Surgery Program, Department of Urology, the Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine and the Division of Endocrinology.

    Training experiences

    Participants in the Visiting Clinicians' Observational Program have the opportunity to choose from one of the following experiences:

    A. Two Day Overview: Clinicians will be able to observe and participate in the function and operation of the clinical services in the Division of Gynecology. The purpose of this experience is to assist health care providers who are attempting to establish similar programs of care for pediatric and adolescent gynecology. Participants will be provided with information for structuring administrative services, clinical activity and staffing, billing and diagnostic coding and patient informational materials which have been developed. Visitors will come on a Thursday and Friday when they will have the opportunity to meet Marc R. Laufer, MD, and participate in the clinical services of the Outpatient Program.

    B. Two Week Program: Participants in the two week program will have the opportunities mentioned in category A and additionally will have the opportunity to observe surgical procedures which occur on Wednesdays in the Children's Operating Room. In addition, you will participate in observing all clinical activities, conference schedules and outpatient clinical services. Participants will have the opportunity to observe the interactions with the Division of Adolescent/Young Adult Medicine Program and the Reproductive Medicine Program. There will be a review of surgical technique and surgical cases will be discussed in depth.

    C. Extended Programs: The extended programs (1 or 2 months) are designed for gynecologists who are interested in outpatient and inpatient surgical techniques in pediatric and adolescent gynecology. Participants will have all of the opportunities in categories A and B. Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to observe many more surgical cases and have the additional opportunity to observe pediatric general surgical cases and pediatric urology surgical cases. Surgical areas to be stressed during this two-month period will include operative and reconstructive procedures in pediatric and adolescent cases and congenital anomaly diagnosis management and surgical treatments.

    Our office will assist all participants in finding options for residence while in Boston, although it should be noted that all costs of living are not included in the fees. At the completion of any of the above listed Visiting Clinicians' Observational Programs, the participant will receive a formal certificate of completion.
