Mark A. Schuster, MD, PhD, joins Children's as chief of General Pediatrics and vice chair for Health Policy Research. Dr. Schuster is a noted pediatrician and researcher in child, adolescent, and family health. He is also a Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.
Before his appointment to Children's, Dr. Schuster was the director of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at the esteemed research organization RAND, where he held the RAND Distinguished Chair in Health Promotion. He was also chief of General Pediatrics and vice chair of the UCLA Department of Pediatrics. He served as founding director of the UCLA/RAND Center for Adolescent Health Promotion, a prevention research center funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Dr. Schuster currently is overseeing National Institutes of Health studies on childhood obesity prevention, adolescent sexual health, children with HIV-infected parents, and the use of paid family leave by families of chronically ill children; and a CDC study tracking 5,000 children over time on such topics as substance use, violence, injuries, physical activity, nutrition, sexual behavior, and mental health.
