Opening Doors: Project Adventure - is an exciting research study promoting community-based recreation for children with disabilities and special health care needs funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR). Project Adventure is working in collaboration with Partners for Youth with Disability (PYD) and the Greater Boston YMCA network.
What is the purpose of the study?
The project is designed to study the effect on the physical health and well-being of children with disabilities and special health care needs of participating in weekly recreation and physical activity. Project Adventure is not a special exercise program for children with disabilities; rather, it is a method to allow children with a wide range of disabilities and special health care needs to enter a community recreational facility and engage in any appropriate activity alongside their non-disabled peers.
How will the study work?
Project Adventure will recruit 120 children with special health care needs and disabilities ages 8 to 15 across the greater Boston area and match them with trained mentors - college or graduate students or other adult members of the child's community - to provide one-to-one support to enable them to participate in recreational activities of their choosing in their communities on a weekly basis. The participating YMCA's are the Roxbury, Brighton, Chinatown/Wang and Central branches.
