Training
Residency
The Division of Endocrinology plays a major role in training Children's Hospital Boston residents to become the next generation of primary care pediatricians, subspecialists and leaders in academic centers. Children's residents have voted the Division of Endocrinology's educational program to be among the best at the hospital.
Fellowship
Educating the next generation of pediatric endocrinologists is fundamental to the Division of Endocrinology's mission. Children's offers an unparalleled opportunity for studying pediatric endocrinology within a strong general pediatric setting. Children's Division of Endocrinology offers a fertile training ground for young physicians and researchers to receive a rich and varied educational experience, drawing on our close relationship with other world-class clinical teachers and researchers in the Harvard Medical School community.

Children's Hospital Boston and the Joslin Diabetes Center offer a 3-year rigorous fellowship program in endocrinology that spans a full range of clinical and research experiences for trainees and is designed for careers in academic endocrinology, combining clinical and research activities.

First Year
In the first year of the three-year program, the focus is on clinical management of outpatient and inpatient disorders.

  • Inpatient service - fellows evaluate and manage all endocrine consultations within the hospital as well as those admitted to the Clinical Research Center, in conjunction with Endocrinology Division faculty.
  • Outpatient service - fellows evaluate and manage patients undergoing complex testing for various endocrine disorders as well as patients engaged in clinical research trials. They also carry out an independent clinical research project.
  • Consultation service - fellows provide endocrine consultation to the NICUs at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
The end of all clinical sessions is highlighted by a lively post-clinic conference in which all trainees review the patients seen that day.

First year fellows are responsible for preparing and conducting approximately 24 clinical conferences at Children's Hospital Boston and the other Harvard-affiliated teaching hospitals. These conferences are intended to provide fellows with the opportunity to investigate clinical topics in depth and to engage a sophisticated group of endocrinologists in discussion.

Second and Third Years
The second and third years are devoted to a comprehensive investigation of one area of basic or clinical research under the supervision of a faculty preceptor. Second and third year fellows also participate in general endocrine clinic one-half day per week, and a twice-monthly diabetes clinic to maintain continuity of care with patients over at least three years.
