Clinical Services (Emergency Medicine):
Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program
Thank you for your interest in our Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program. The Emergency Department presently consists of forty-five PEM staff members who are jointly appointed by Children's Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School. Currently, there are seventeen fellows in our program. We anticipate having positions for four to five new fellows beginning July 2009.

The duration of the fellowship is three years for graduates of pediatric residency programs in accordance with requirements set by the American Board of Pediatrics. The first year fellowship curriculum consists of five months of clinical rotations in areas related to pediatric emergency medicine: anesthesia, critical care/transport medicine, medical toxicology, sports medicine, and general emergency medicine. In the second fellowship year, the curriculum focuses on the continued development of clinical skills but begins to provide dedicated time for research. The second year includes a one month trauma rotation and another month of general emergency medicine. In the third fellowship year, the greatest emphasis is on the completion of a major research project and developing clinical independence. Throughout the three years there is a didactic curriculum, which includes research seminars, quality improvement/risk management, journal club, statistical methods/research design and clinical management conferences.

Graduates of emergency medicine (EM) residencies are required to complete only two years of fellowship training. To provide more in depth exposure to pediatric medicine, the curriculum includes first-year clinical rotations of neonatology, pediatric subspecialties, general pediatrics service, anesthesia, and critical care/transport medicine. In the second year, skills in research and administration are reinforced. A one-month clinical elective in medical toxicology is included in the second year curriculum.

Our division has also been awarded a National Research Services Award (NRSA) grant to establish a Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician-scientist training path. For those committed to a long-term research career, this pathway will provide funding, mentorship and protected time during the senior years of the fellowship. Three research tracks are available; clinical investigation, medical informatics, and basic science. Those enrolled as trainees in this program will receive additional research time in the third year as well as salary and educational support for 1-2 additional years, depending on the track.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowships use ERAS for applications. Please go to the ERAS site at www.aamc.org/eras to submit your application. Through ERAS your application and the following items are required for a completed application: 1) curriculum vitae (MUST include months and years), 2) personal statement, 3) three letters of recommendation, 4) a copy of your Dean's letter from your medical school (sent from your medical school directly to ERAS), and 5) a current photograph. Applications are screened by a divisional committee based on the application including reference letters that document the applicant's clinical excellence. Selected candidates will then be invited for an interview. Deadline for submission of all application material (through ERAS) is Thursday, August 29, 2008.

Our Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship program is part of the National Resident Matching Program. Please contact NRMP at 202-828-0676 for any information or questions concerning this matter.

Thank you for your interest in our program. If you have questions or wish to check the status of your application, please call 617-355-6624 and speak to Kevin Deschenes or via email
