One-year fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) are available in pediatric anesthesia at Children's Hospital Boston. Because the ACGME requires free-standing children's hospitals to be associated with a core anesthesia residency program in order to offer subspecialty fellowship training, it is identified as the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Children's Hospital Boston program even though all the training occurs at Children's.
The minimum requirement for acceptance is eligibility for board certification in anesthesiology. Foreign anesthesiologists should be board-certified in their own country.
A two-year program is available to individuals with a strong interest in pursuing an academic career in pediatric anesthesia. The first year is the same as the one-year clinical fellowship. The second year consists primarily of research, with two days per week in the operating rooms. It is designed to provide substantial opportunity for fellows to develop one or more areas of research expertise.
