Basic Topics in Pediatric Anesthesia (Tuesday & Thursday, 6:45-7:15 a.m.)
This program is based on the pediatric section of the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) content outline. These 30-minute lectures review 22 to 24 topics over a three-month cycle. This format provides the basic knowledge base mandated by the ABA.

Risk Management Conference (Wednesday, 7-8 a.m. in alternation w/Grand Rounds.)
This is the morbidity and mortality/quality improvement conference for the department. This conference reports on the number and severity of complications, discusses pertinent cases, and reports on other issues of quality improvement, such as equipment bulletins from the Biomedical Engineering Department.

Grand Rounds (Wednesday, 7-8 a.m.)
Grand Rounds is a forum for invited speakers on topics relevant to pediatric anesthesia.

Controversial Issues / Fellows Talk (Friday, 6:45-7:15 a.m.)
This conference focuses on controversial issues pertinent to pediatric anesthesia, pain management, and critical care medicine. The fellows, under the supervision of their faculty advisors, research a topic of their choice and present a lecture to members of the department.

Anesthesia Research Conference (Last Thursday of each month, 4-5 p.m.)
At this conference faculty and fellows present clinical and laboratory research projects at various stages of completion, from initial proposal to final results. This both keeps the faculty abreast of current research within the department and allows suggestions to improve the projects to be made in a supportive environment.

Pediatric Anesthesia Fellows Seminar (Tuesdays, 6:30-7:15 a.m.)
Detailed reviews of special areas in pediatric anesthesia are conducted as oral and written examinations and directed literature reviews. Open only to fellows.

Fellows Journal Club (Second Thursday, 6:30-7:15 a.m.)
Papers reviewing basic principles of pediatric anesthesia are distributed in advance and discussed with emphasis on their scientific validity and clinical relevance.

Chairman/Fellows Tutorial (Third Thursday, 6:30-7:15 a.m.)
Fellows have the opportunity to meet monthly with the chairman to discuss issues of educational importance with specific topics suggested by the fellows. Open only to fellows.

Basic Topics in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia (daily, except Wednesdays, 6:30-7 a.m.)
These 30-minute discussions review several topics over a one-month cycle. This format provides some of the basic information important for pediatric cardiac anesthesia.

Mortality and Morbidity Review (Saturday, 9-10 a.m.)
This multidisciplinary conference reviews the preoperative problems experienced by selected patients and attempts to define better management modes

Case Conference (Tuesday, noon-1 p.m.)
This multidisciplinary conference focuses on the management of children and adolescents with chronic pain syndromes.

"Schmerzgruppe" (Alternate Wednesdays, 4-5 p.m.)
This conference reviews clinical and laboratory studies on pain topics, focusing on ongoing research and a review of the literature.

Chronic Pain Management Follow-up Conference (Thursday, noon-1 p.m.)
At this conference, faculty and fellows review the management plan and current status of chronic pain patients.

Morning Report (daily, 8:15-8:30 a.m.)
The new admissions and major events from the preceding day are discussed.

Medical Grand Rounds (Wednesday, noon-1 p.m.)
This is the premier weekly conference of the hospital's Department of Medicine. Lecturers of national and international prominence discuss advances in their fields.

Case Conference (Wednesday, 1-2 p.m.)
All MICU admissions of the week are reviewed and management options discussed; chronic cases are reviewed and updated.

Fellows' Conference (Monday and Tuesday, noon-1 p.m.)
These are informal conferences that vary: pathophysiology review, invited lectures, presentations by fellows, and video presentations.

Rotating Conference (Thursday, noon-1 p.m.)
This conference rotates its focus weekly among issues in critical care with invited speakers, a journal club, a clinical and pathological correlation conference, and a research conference.

The Boston Anesthesia Simulator Center
The Departments of Anaesthesia of the hospitals affiliated with Harvard Medical School offer experience in crisis resource management in a simulated operating room environment as well as computer simulation of basic and advanced anesthesia concepts.

Pediatric Anesthesia Review Course
A four-day course is presented every other spring in collaboration with the Department of Anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
