Flower Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship
One-year fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) are available in pediatric anesthesia at Children's Hospital Boston. Because the ACGME requires free-standing children's hospitals to be associated with a core anesthesia residency program in order to offer subspecialty fellowship training, it is identified as the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Children's Hospital Boston program even though all the training occurs at Children's.

The minimum requirement for acceptance is eligibility for board certification in anesthesiology. Foreign anesthesiologists should be board-certified in their own country.

A two-year program is available to individuals with a strong interest in pursuing an academic career in pediatric anesthesia. The first year is the same as the one-year clinical fellowship. The second year consists primarily of research, with two days per week in the operating rooms. It is designed to provide substantial opportunity for fellows to develop one or more areas of research expertise.

Schedule

The schedule for the one-year clinical fellowship and for the first year of the two-year combined clinical and research fellowship is as follows:

Rotations Months
Main Operation Rooms 6-7
Cardiac Anesthesia 1-2
Multidisciplinary ICU 1
Pain Treatment Service 1
Vacation/Meeting 1
Flexibility exists to modify the standard rotations based upon the special training, experience and needs of individual fellows, as well as the clinical requirements of the department. All fellows receive appointments both at Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Applications should be received 12-15 months prior to the anticipated starting date. Candidates should be aware that acceptances are issued on a "rolling" basis so early applications are encouraged.
